Politecnico di Milano (POLIMI)

The Department of Aerospace Engineering of POLIMI is one of the largest Aerospace Engineering schools in Italy and an excellent aerospace engineering institution, acknowledged by industry and accreditation boards. The Department has strong research experience in the aerospace field, especially on rotary wing aero-servo-elasticity and structural dynamics, and on computational mechanics and multi-body dynamics in general. The aero-elasticity research group at POLIMI participated in EU projects within FP6 – ADYN, 3AS, FRIENDCOPTER, NICETRIP – and has also worked on several European collaborative programmes under the auspices of GARTEUR, including AG-16 on RPC.

POLIMI’s main tasks in ARISTOTEL focus on

  • collecting information on FEM/multi-body bio-dynamical pilot models
  • developing new models and integrating them in offline aero-servo-elastic simulation of rotorcraft
  • setting up and performing pilot bio-dynamical experiments to provide a specific experimental database for the validation of the FEM/multi-body pilot models
  • analyzing the effects of the pilot bio-dynamics on the flight mechanics and aero-servo-elasticity of rotorcraft, and specifically on tiltrotors
